Red Abalone

Scientific Name: Haliotis rufescens
Range: Oregon to Baja California
Habitat: Subtidal rocky shores
Diet: Herbivores; eat different types of algae.
Size: Up to 1 foot (30 cm)
Fun Fact: This abalone is California's largest marine snail. The holes along the abalone's shell allow water to pass over the gills and as it grows it creates new holes and plugs up the old ones.
