Brown Pelican

Scientific Name: Pelecanus occidentalis
Range: British Columbia to southern Ecuador
Habitat: Coastal, strictly marine species, primarily found in marine subtidal, estuarine, and marine pelagic waters.
Diet: Small fishes, such as anchovies, sardines, mullet, and topsmelt.
Size: 3-5 ft (0.9-1.5 m) in length, wingspan up to 6.5 ft (1.9 m)
Fun Fact: Dives from heights up to 65 ft (19.8 m) twisting to the left to protect their esophagus and trachea before plunging into the water. Their huge pouch expands, and scoops up prey and up to about three gallons of water.
